Missing teeth not only can cause discomfort but can create extensive health issues. Dental implants are a great way to correct and prevent complications or damage. Things such as trouble eating, talking, resorption, and suffering from lack of self-confidence are all major side effects of missing teeth. At Pleasanton Prosthodontics, Dr. Chao and her team want to make sure you understand all of this issues and help you correct or prevent the damage caused by missing or damaged teeth.
If you have been looking into replacing missing or damaged teeth, you’ve probably heard about resorption. But what is it really? Well, the term refers to the shrinking of the jawbone. Your teeth are held in place by their roots, which are connected to your jawbone. Normal actions such as chewing and biting create physical stimulation. As tooth roots act as a stimulus for the bone, helps your jaw maintain a healthy mass. Missing teeth means that your jaw is no longer receiving this stimulation and it begins to shrink or “resorb”.
The good news is that shrinking jawbone tissue is something that can be prevented. Dental implants can replace the roots missing with your teeth. As a result, this prosthetic tooth root can recreate the stimulation to the jaw that is missing. Once in place, your implants can halt the rate of bone loss, and get you back to looking and feeling your best.
Because traditional tooth replacement options like dentures and bridges do not interact with the bone tissue, they don’t provide that stimulation. As a result, they won’t prevent your jaw from shrinking or the damage that can occur when this takes place.
While it might seem scary, resorption is preventable and can be stopped with dental implants.
